JYF Camp 2007 Epistle

JYF camp ’07 was awesome.
The people were awesome.
The food was awesome.
The activities were awesome.
Christchurch was… cold.

Our two main groundrules this year at camp were, ‘Keep the vibe good’ and, ‘don’t engage in really, really, really, really stupid behaviour.’ We mostly abided by these rules for the duration of the camp but Zoë and Louie did indulge in sharing some Pantera songs such as “Walk”, Rogan did wear a disturbingly orange g-string (a gift from his Secret Friend) and the locals of Rangiora were terrorized by a large group of teenage Quakers singing the lyrics to Gwen Stefani’s ‘Holla back Girl’ very, very loudly as we walked down the quiet street.

Whilst on camp, we learned that making a life plan could get you into space! Or, at least, that’s what Mark Rocket, of NZ’s very own Rocket Lab, did. Other than Mr. Rocket (and, yes, he did change his name…) we had many other discussions that were both thought-provoking and quirky. Especially our insights into Julian Carver’s 90’s Rave fashion…

Our amazing YF leaders, Thomas Watts, Mirjam Guesgen, Melody Ireland and Johnny Fersterer-Gawith and great organisers/supervisors, Julian and Bridget (Bridget was also the cook, and her food was delicious!) along with the guidance of everyone’s favourite textile deity, ‘Carpet Jesus’ (a carpet mural on the wall inside the hall at Journey’s End) made the camp an incredibly fun experience for everyone involved.
