Community Life at the Settlement

The 16 households here are quite autonomous but we work at cooperating in ways that are rarely possible in suburban NZ.

We have a flat organisational structure: with no manager or director. Decisions about our life together, the development of the Quaker educational programme and around our stewardship of the land and the Seminar Centre are all made at a weekly Management Meeting which all Settlers are expected to attend. These decisions are made “in the manner of Friends”: there is no voting. Clerking (chairing) of these meetings is rotated and appointments are made for specific tasks, taking account of the particular skills and availability of individuals. The responsibility for hosting seminar participants and for care of the central facilities is also rotated.

A Friends Meeting for Worship is held in the Quiet Room Monday-Saturday at 8.30am. On Tuesday there is a coffee morning, often preceded by work together. Working bees are called for larger tasks, eg: gathering firewood, gardening, painting. There is always one shared meal each week, generally at the weekend.

There is an expectation that every Settler will contribute to the overall health of the Settlement according to their talents and abilities.
